Aesthetic Judgment: St. Sistine Chapel

The St. Sistine Chapel is, no doubt, not simply rectangular in shape exteriorly. The shape of the Sistine Chapel is a display of geometrical variations used to create decoration and uniformity as perceived through the eyes of its viewer. Its blank exterior serves to give more focus to its geometrical accuracy and draw the eyes of its viewer to the types of lines used. Vertically implied lines and the verticality of the buttresses draw your eyes downward to meet more points of verticality which seem to be the main basis of the building. These vertical lines emit a sense of stability within its surrounding as well as a sense of dignity (hence it being an ecclesiastical building) or formality.

On the interior, the chapel measures 40.9 x 13.4 x 20.7 meters. This is the same measurements given within the Old Testaments to construct Solomon’s Temple; therefore, it also has historical and religious value. The interior of the St. Sistine Chapel is decorated vastly with frescoes upon the walls and ceilings which express Biblical themes and ignudi. The frescoes upon the wall are separated at horizontal lines which express peace and permanence. The curvature leading to the ceiling draws the eye to its center. These curves are created by the buttresses which curve inwardly toward the ceiling.

The beauty of the Sistine Chapel is expressed through its mathematical formula derived from its dimensions and the many paintings which covers its surface; however, the numerous colors and reoccurring biblical theme detracts from the interest to study it further. The colors used do not express completely harmony or unity but rather expresses instability to me through even proportions. This equality inevitably expresses instability through balance.

The building is of little value to its surrounding because over several years numerous buildings have been constructed around it of the same color, if not the same style for the exterior. However, its interior does hold a great amount of aesthetic value to the viewer.
